Sophia learns the value of a dollar.  Sophia is excited for her family's upcoming vacation to Cape May, New Jersey.  She is even more excited to enter the annual Sand Castle Competition. Sophia's parents explain that she will need to learn to save her money if she want's to enter the competition, as well as purchase the tools she will need in order to compete. Sophia's family was going on a vacation to Cape May. She was so excited! Going down the shore was one of Sophia's favorite things to do, and this year was going to be special.  This year Sophia was officially old enough to enter the annual Sand Castle Competition!

A Special Vacation

A few weeks before Sophia and her family were planning to leave, Sophia's parents sat her down to talk about the competition. 

They explained that to enter the sand castle competition, she would need to start saving money for beach tools and the competition's entrance fee. 
 
Sophia was puzzled. Save money? She had never done that before.

Money Matters

Determined to join the competition, Sophia started saving every penny she earned! She helped with chores, returned bottles for coins, and even set up her own lemonade stand. 


Every time Sophia earned a dollar, she put it away in her savings account.  That way, the money would stay safe until it was time to use it.

Sophia focused on building her sand castle, with various tools around her and a small, but intricate castle taking shape.

Finally, the day of the competition arrived. Sophia had saved enough money to buy her tools. As she built her sand castle, she realized the value of hard work and saving. Her castle may not have been the biggest, but it was made with love and determination. Sophia felt like a winner.
