Mary was walking home from school when she heard a soft whimpering coming from the bushes. Curious, she approached and found a small beagle with big ears looking up at her with sad eyes. The dog wagged its tail as Mary gently petted its head. She looked around, but no owner was in sight.

A New Friend

Determined to find the dog's owner, Mary made posters with the beagle's picture and hung them around the neighborhood. She called him Ben, after a character in her favorite book. Every day, Mary and Ben would go out, hoping someone would recognize him. But days turned into weeks, and no one came forward.

Looking for the Owner

As time passed, Mary and Ben became inseparable. They played in the garden, went for walks, and Ben even slept at the foot of Mary's bed. Mary taught Ben tricks, and in return, Ben gave Mary endless affection. They were the best of friends.

Becoming Friends

One evening, Mary's parents sat her down for a talk. They had noticed how close Mary and Ben had become. They told Mary that if Ben's owner didn't show up soon, they could consider keeping him. Mary's heart leaped with joy at the thought.

Even with the possibility of keeping Ben, Mary continued her search for his owner. She felt it was the right thing to do. Mary and Ben visited the local animal shelter and vet offices, asking if anyone had reported a missing beagle. Everyone they met loved Ben, but no one knew his owner.

The Search Continues

One afternoon, while Mary and Ben were playing in the yard, a car pulled up. A woman got out, looking hopefully at Ben. She explained she had been away and returned to find her beloved dog missing. Mary felt a mix of happiness and sadness.

A Surprise Visitor

The woman was indeed Ben's owner. She was so grateful to Mary for taking care of him. Mary knew she had to say goodbye to her furry friend. With tears in her eyes, she hugged Ben tightly, whispering a promise to never forget him.

The next day, Ben's owner came back with a surprise. She had a little beagle puppy for Mary! She explained that Ben had missed Mary too much, and she couldn't separate them. Now, Mary had a new friend, and Ben visited often. It was the best of both worlds.
